Yadkin Creek Progress

The Yadkin Creek Watershed Coalition, in conjunction with Gateway Trout Unlimited (GTU) and Forest ReLeaf of Missouri, completed the first phase of stream improvement project along the creek on Saturday. About 25 local volunteers helped plant 30 trees and 30 shrubs to help reduce stream bank erosion, improve habitat and reduce flood damage along the creek. The trees and shrubs were planted along a 200-foot section of the creek near Country Mart adjacent to the Greenway Trail. Steelville Stream Project: Volunteers Needed!

Attention GTU Members and Friends: On March 19th GTU will begin work on the Steelville Stream Project. This initial effort is a streambank preservation featuring tree and shrub planting (30 each) to stem runoff and erosion of Yadkin Creek. We will be working in close collaboration with the Steelville Watershed Coaltion led by Rob Viehman. Rob and his team will provide planting machinery, tools, soil, mulch, and volunteers. Dam Repair At Maramec Spring Moving Forward Work to repair a dam damaged by recent flooding is in progress at Maramec Spring Park, and proceeding quickly. State and local workers have been working to recreate the dam, while maintaining the historical element to the spring. Yadkin Creek Project Gets Thumbs-up From Council Steelville’s city council has approved a plan to make improvements along the Yadkin Creek. The proposal to put native plants in streambank plantings and rain gardens along the creek was brought to the February 17 council meeting by Rob Viehman, representing the Yadkin Creek Watershed Coalition.
